Best League Three Teams

League Three has had a rich history that dates all the way back to 1920. During this time it has had a large number of different teams passing through it. Some have been defeated and faced relegation, whereas others have risen to the top and been promoted to higher leagues.

The tier level of League Three itself has also changed. For many years it was the third-highest tier in all of English football. However, after the formation of the Premier League, it is now considered the fourth-highest. There are several teams that are currently in the league and have excelled above their rivals.

Sunderland

Sunderland Association Football Club was first established in 1879. They have won 6 high profile titles in the past. This has included first division and Premier League wins. They have also been runners up 5 times. However, they currently reside in League Three. The team plays home matches at the Stadium of Light.

Coventry City

This West Midlands based team is also a contender for the best of league three. They were originally known as Singers FC after forming as a group by members of the Singer Factor Gentlemen’s club. They changed the name to Coventry City in 1883 and joined the Football League in 1919.

Portsmouth

This club is located in Hampshire and has home games at Fratton Park. Portsmouth have won a large number of tournaments throughout the 20th and 21st century. However, they have yet to win the EFL Cup.

Bolton Wanderers

Bolton Wanderers are well known to fans of football. The club can be found in the Greater Manchester area. It was originally the Christ Church Football Club until 1877. Bolton has won the FA Cup four times. They are certainly a formidable team to play against for rivals within the third league.
